This was how Boracay must have looked like 40 years ago

BORACAY ISLAND -- With the start of the six-month closure of Boracay, the droves of tourists that normally crowd the 4-kilometer stretch of fine white sand beach are gone from the island.

What's left are the residents and a few foreign and local tourists who had the lucky draw of booking their stay way in advance and over the date of the official start of the closure on April 26.

Elsewhere in the island, workers from different government agencies began pounding the streets and tearing down walls, but down at White Beach, the government has allowed a portion around Station 1 for the exclusive use of residents (and a few lucky visitors).

They are down to a few hundreds and compared to a day before when thousands frolicked around the beach, they had the entire White Beach with the powdery-white sand and crystal clear waters (which have made this island the country’s most famous tourist destination) all to their own.

Families wasted no time to escape the hustle in town and proceeded to the beach with the kids. This was probably how it was for the few locals who used to enjoy this piece of paradise before the tourism boom began.

Boracay eats: Cha-cha's lets the fun shine in

BORACAY -- Summer is fast approaching, and to many, the ultimate fun in the sun can only mean a trip to Condé Nast Traveler's Readers’ Choice Awards’ World’s Best Island of 2016—Boracay.

But this Mecca for beach lovers and thrill seekers is also fast becoming a food destination. It’s home to numerous hole in D’Mall restaurants, cafes in its innards and alleyways, and restaurant concepts from A to Z dotting the whole of White Beach.

Standing out is a challenge. New players must find ways to step up their game like in the case of one of Boracay’s newest restaurants, Cha-cha’s Beach Café at the Coast Boracay, which marks the triumphant return of the Raintree Hospitality Group to the island.

As the hotel’s main F&B outlet, Cha-cha’s Beach Cafe serves an extensive breakfast spread to guests, including breakfast staples like freshly made bread, bacon, hashbrowns, rice and various fix-ins, an egg station, overnight oats, salads, cereals, among others.

Some unconventional items are also on offer like pizza (for our visit it was Breakfast Pizza with chives, cheese, bacon with a fried egg), some curry (a deep flavored and rich fish curry), a pho station, hummus with chips, 65-degree soft boiled eggs, and waffles with ube sauce, to name some.

Morning coffee, meanwhile, can be a glass of cold brew, or a cup of hot coffee. Latte, flat white, mocha or Americano, each cup is made fresh at every order.

Breakfast endings are sweeter with pastries, cakes, as well as healthier items like fresh fruit, and house-made fruit-yogurt cups.

ALA CARTE

For the other times of the day, there’s Cha-cha’s Beach Café ala carte menu. Serving the best out of Raintree’s restaurants, their menu contains “tropical” versions of Raintree favorites.

Take the Winner Winner Fried Chicken, inspired by Providore’s Winner Winner Chicken Dinner -- juicy fried chicken in a light batter, served alongside fries and two dips -- a chili honey, and a white gravy. Suiting the location, the chili honey hits the spot, adding hot and sweet to a savory bite of chicken.

Pizza is a common item in some of Raintree’s restaurants (Stella, Chelsea, Museum Café), and now, Cha-cha’s Beach Café’s as well. Stone-fired thin-crust classics like Margherita, All Meat, or pineapple-topped Hawaii Five-o, are available, as well as signature flavors like the Sriracha BBQ Chicken (sweet and spicy, topped with tender pieces of chicken barbecue, shredded lettuce, and finished with a fruity drizzle of heat from sriracha).

Grilled Chicken Satay feels like a nod to the Asian flavors of the Museum Café. Eight sticks of chicken kissed by the grill served with a spicy coconut peanut sauce, cooled down with a side of fresh cucumbers and red onions. Nahmprik or a chili salt is available on the side to taste.

How about some street tacos in Boracay? Cha-cha’s Taco Truck has homemade soft tortillas with filling options like Carne Asada, BBQ Chicken, and Fish. Try the Carnitas with its sweet-adobo pork filling a perfect combo to a swig of beer, or your liquor of choice.

Fresh seafood is one of the great things about island life, and in Cha-cha’s bestsellers include a Cold Seafood Platter (swimmer crabs, prawn cocktail, poke, ceviche, clams, and mussels), and their answer to the poke craze, a big bright bowl of sunshine, the Cold Spicy Salmon and Tuna Poke Bowl (raw tuna and salmon with pickled cucumber, fresh avocado, ikura (fish roe), gari (pickled ginger), fresh seaweed, and nori over Japanese rice).

The signature dessert, meanwhile, takes its cue from Chelsea’s Tres Leches. Cha-cha’s Coconut Mango Tres Leches has milk-soaked cake layers covered with Chantilly cream and sprinkled with dessicated coconut on a pool of cold Mango sauce with sago pearls. Striking and beautiful, best to be shared.

DRINKS BY THE BEACH

Nothing beats a cold drink by the beach, and in Cha-cha’s Beach Cafe these can translate to smoothies, floats, shakes, beer, mocktails, and cocktails.

Mocktails to mention include the Passionfruit, Orange & Matcha Iced Tea, and the Grapefruit, Lemon and Ginger soda, citrusy concoctions that can effortlessly refresh in a hot summer’s day.

For some serious vacation-vibes, there’s the Tropical Fruit Punch, packing quite the fruity wallop with pineapple, watermelon, orange juice and some cherry syrup.

On the more alcoholic side of things, one cocktail option is the National, a Cuba Libre-esque rum drink that replaces lime and sugar, with Filipino ingredients like calamansi and panocha sugar.

If you’ve never done it, having ‘A Really Cheesy Umbrella Tiki Drink’ by the beach during a vacation should be a must-do. The cloudy cocktail is a melon liqueur-tinged pina colada made extra cheesy with a pineapple-umbrella garnish in a fun Tiki glass. You can’t help but “Let The Fun Shine” as you sip this wearing your beach togs, as you stare at the beach and bask at the gloriousness of where you are.

Happy hour starts at 3 p.m. every day with buy 1 take 1 promo on selected cocktails, and special beer promotions.

In an island of many choices, Cha-cha’s Beach Café offers an intriguing mix of the old and the new, the familiar and the unusual. Food-wise that translates to reimagined bestselling Raintree dishes, while for the hotel, it’s the trademark Raintree hospitality once felt in the island, but now in a new location, also in prices that won’t break the bank.

Heading to Boracay? Try Chatime's 3 exclusive drinks

BORACAY – Planning to go to Boracay this summer? You might want to try the drinks served exclusively at Chatime’s branch at the White Beach.

The well-known Taiwanese milk tea chain recently launched a branch in Boracay, just a few steps from the White Beach shoreline. The new store offers all of Chatime’s bestselling products as well as three drinks that are served only on the island.

Taking a cue from the popularity of fruit shakes in Boracay, Chatime offers drinks made with crushed ice, tea and fresh fruits in season to beat the summer heat.

The Watermelon Lychee Fruit Tea is the most refreshing of the bunch, which also includes the sweet Mango Green Tea and the thick and creamy Banana Mango Milk Shake.

“These items are only for this store,” Chatime Philippines’ Chris Cua said as he showed the new products to selected members of the media. “For now, it’s mango, banana and watermelon. We’ll try using other fruits soon.”

“Over there is a famous fruit shake bar, and this is our take on that,” he added. “It’s not really a smoothie because we use crushed ice. You can chew on it and you get that added texture.”

Aside from the fruit shakes, Chatime has also introduced milk tea smoothies, which are only available in Philippine branches. Variants include Banana Milk Tea Smoothie, Strawberry Milk Tea Smoothie and Honey Oolong Tea Smoothie.

“The base is milk tea and it is made into a smoothie,” Cua said. “These are some of our bestselling milk teas.”

Soon to be available in the country is the global Chatime product Tea Air, which mixes tea with carbonated water.

Boracay Water starts building P86M transmission line

MANILA, Philippines - Boracay Water said it has started building the Nabaoy Transmission Line, which is aimed at increasing water supply capacity in the island.

The P86-million project includes the construction of a 5.5 kilometer pipe connecting Nabaoy River water source to the Caticlan Water Treatment Plant.

The project will increase water supply capacity from 14.5 million liters per day (MLD) to 20 MLD.

MANILA – Boracay Water is expecting to complete its new sewer project and sewer treatment plant in 2016, the company said on Monday.

Boracay Water, the water and used water service provider of Boracay Island, aims to expand used water coverage in the popular tourist spot to 75 percent from the current 31 percent with its Manocmanoc Sewer Network and Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), which has the capacity to treat 5 million liters per day (MLD).

The P258 million 5 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant, meanwhile, will support the sewage process treatment such as debris and grit removal, biological treatment, conventional activated sludge, and disinfection.

“This will ensure that used water is safe for marine life and suitable for recreational activities when it goes back to the waters of Boracay, complying with the SB Standard of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources,” the company said in a statement.

Infographic: Your guide to a well-planned Boracay vacation

MANILA, Philippines - While you’re daydreaming about walking barefoot on super fine white sand, bathing under the scorching sun, and partying all night, it’s wise to plan on how you can make your Boracay summer getaway worry-free and budget friendly.

Most travel junkies say that fun doesn’t always depend upon how much money you can spend. But these are frequent travellers who are experts in stretching a budget, creating detailed itineraries, and having the best time of their lives.

Don’t be overwhelmed!

There are just four things you need to focus on when planning: transportation, accommodation, food and recreation.

Traveling to Boracay
If you don’t mind long travel hours and if you find airfares too costly, you can go by sea or by Ro-Ro. Otherwise, book a flight to Kalibo or Caticlan during a seat sale. While flights to Kalibo are much cheaper than direct flights to Caticlan, the travel duration going to Caticlan Jetty Port is longer than your flight from Manila to Kalibo.

Finding budget accommodation

Research on rooms, rates, and amenities. Be practical and opt for a boutique hotel instead of a luxury resort. If you’re travelling with a large group, there are dormitory type rooms in the residential areas much cheaper than those near the beach shores. Book at least 30 days in advance so you can get discounted rates. If you happen to pick a bit more comfortable accommodation, consider sharing a room with friends or family to cut down on room expenses.

Hunting for good eats

There are a lot of restaurants and bars on the island. Most of the restaurants with the best reviews are at White Beach. Plan at least three meal stops in a day then multiply by the number of days for the entire trip. Ask for suggestions from your friends or read reliable, online food blogs. Most people don’t spend much on food because there are hundreds of affordable options.

Experiencing true paradise
Aside from the splendid beaches and picturesque sunset, sports activities and nightlife are among the tourist magnets of the Philippines’ top tropical hotspot. Unless you’re spending the rest of your life on the island, select the activities that stand out the most. Create a list of events and hangout places in Boracay and mark the ones that suit your penchants. Some of the most beautiful spots in the island might not actually cost you a penny. Be adventurous and make the most of your time exploring its hidden corners.

A trip to Boracay does not have to eat up all your savings. The key is to plan ahead, allot a budget and stick to it. And again, don’t be overwhelmed.

Here’s an infographic to help you prepare for your most awaited Boracay vacation:

Boracay among 'rising star' destinations

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines’ Boracay island can add another feather to its cap as it has been recognized as one of the world’s “rising star” destinations by a travel recommendation site.

Gogobot recently announced the winners of its 2013 Travelers’ Favorite Awards, which is based on survey responses and nominations from its community of around 2.5 million registered users.

While the Philippines did not made it to Gogobot’s “Top Destinations” list, Boracay was included in the “Top 15 Rising Star Destinations,” ranking seventh.

Gogobot described the places included in this category as "destinations poised to take off or ripe for rediscovery."

“Boracay island, in the center of the Philippine archipelago, is a white-sanded island that rivals the best Pacific beaches. White Beach offers all the Caribbean delights from lounging on a beach chair to diving and snorkeling, and Bulabog beach is closer to wind and kite-surfing opportunities. With plenty of bakeries and international restaurants, Boracay deserves a more prominent place on the list of island paradises,” the website read.

Topping the “Top 15 Rising Star Destinations” list is Moscow in Russia, followed by San Antonio in Texas and Edinburgh in the United Kingdom.

San Francisco, California topped Gogobot’s “Top Destinations” list this year, followed by London, United Kingdom; and Paris, France.

Several travel magazines and websites have praised Boracay for being one of the best beach destinations in the world today. But an article recently published in the Wall Street Journal lamented how the island has suffered from overdevelopment.

Makati Shang in ‘Top Hotels Worldwide’ list

Meanwhile, the Philippines’ Makati Shangri-La hotel ranked 13th in Gogobot’s “Top Hotels Worldwide” list for 2013, which was topped by The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. It is the only Philippine-based hotel in the list.

In Asia, Makati Shangri-La ranked third, with The Peninsula Hong Kong and Taj Mahal Palace and Tower in India in first and second place, respectively.

Swimming safety limit set for Boracay tourists

MANILA, Philippines – The lifeguard center of Boracay Island has implemented a safety limit for tourists swimming in the beach due to strong waves caused by inclement weather.

Authorities said tourists will not be allowed to swim farther than 15 meters from the shore.

Rescuers of the lifeguard center advise beachgoers not to swim towards the deep end of the sea during bad weather conditions.

They said 3 people drowned last week during the onslaught of the southwest monsoon.

This week, the rescuers said 12 people were rescued.

The island currently has 20 lifeguards monitoring the beach, apart from the lifeguards employed by various resorts in Boracay. -- Report from Kenneth Ladigohon, ABS-CBN News Iloilo

Boracay beats Santorini and Bali as World’s Best Island

From No. 4 island overall in the world and No. 2 island in Asia in 2011, Boracay Island this year beats world renowned destinations like Santorini, Bali, and Sicily to emerge as 2012′s World’s Best Island in the annual survey of US-based magazine Travel + Leisure.

This year’s winners of the survey, which is now on its 17th year, were determined through a questionnaire developed and issued by the magazine’s editors in association with ROI Research Inc. The survey was made available to magazine readers through TLWorldsBest.com from December 1, 2010, to March 31, 2012. The survey took strict standards in the sense that after March 31, respondents were even screened by the T + L team just to ensure the survey retains its integrity and “any identified travel-industry professionals who completed the survey were eliminated from the final tally.”

Boracay leaped ahead of last year’s Best Island, Santorini in Greece, which has gone down to No. 6 this year. Bali in Indonesia retains its No. 2 position. Last year’s No. 3, Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, was nowhere in this year’s Top 10 list. Instead, this year’s No. 3 is Galapagos while No. 4 went to Maui. The other islands named were Great Barrier Reef Islands (No. 5), Kauai (No. 7), Big Island in Hawaii (No. 8), Sicily in Italy (No. 9), and Vancouver Island in British Columbia (No. 10).

In a Today show guesting, T+L’s features director Nilou Mohammed announced the new set of Travel + Leisure World’s Best Award winners. She described Boracay as very important because it’s “something you should know about when you’re interested in culture and value. It’s a place that’s not really on everyone’s radar but not only does it have hotels that start at US$50 but also incredible hotels like the Shangri-La So you get the high and low.”

In an August 2011, Sarah Storms of T + L: “Now that even tiny islands such as Koh Samui are becoming mainstream, Boracay, in the Philippines, may be one of the last undiscovered Asian beach getaways.”

Discovery Shores in Boracay also bagged Travel + Leisure World’s Best 2012 Hotel Spa in the Asian Region. T + L has described the experience in the luxurious resort as: “Barefoot elegance is the prevailing vibe on this tiny island, where the 2 ½-mile stretch known as White Beach is often singled out for having the softest sand in the world.”

Top winners in each category will be honored at an awards ceremony on July 14 to be hosted by the magazine’s Editor in Chief Nancy Novogrod and VP/Publisher Jean-Paul Kyrillos at the new Mr. C Beverly Hills hotel in Los Angeles.
