Group date? There are apps for that
Move over Tinder -- a crop of dating apps in smartphone-addicted Asia is offering to recruit friends for group dates or send along a chaperone to steer the course of romance.
While dating apps developed in the West encourage one-on-one, often no-strings-attached meetings, many in Asia are as much about old-school courtship or friendship in a region where meeting a stranger in a bar can still be a taboo.
"My upbringing was very close to my parents, religious, traditional and old-fashioned. You couldn't go on dates if your parents didn't know the guy," said Valenice Balace, who developed the Peekawoo service in the Philippines two years ago.
"I grew up with chaperoned dates and even when I was in college my kid sister was always with me on dates."
Too shy to make eye contact in bars as a singleton, the 26-year-old turned to apps similar to Tinder, which boasts tens of millions of active users, where photos of potential matches are instantly liked or rejected.
But after one man suggested he come to her house after their first online conversation, Balace realized the set-up was not for her.
And so the Filipina entrepreneur created an app which not only discouraged users from meeting one-on-one but also offered a chaperone service for those who requested it.
As Peekawoo expanded -– it now has around 7,000 members -– it was no longer practical for the small company to provide a chaperone for every couple who asked for one, and so Balace's team started organizing meetups instead.
It is a model shared by Hong Kong-based app Grouvly, which sets up groups of six people for dates.
'Hard to meet people'
"When I came to Asia, I realised it was hard to meet people," explains Colombian-born CEO Camilo Paredes.
"I also realized that most of the Asians were somewhat shy, they're not confrontational, they don't put themselves out there."
His solution was to mimic American Grouper, which matches two people according to the information on their Facebook profiles, then asks them to bring two friends with them to a bar for a six-person meet up.
While the majority of pairings are men meeting women, there is also the option of all-male or all-female dates.
"One-on-one can be super awkward. Two-on-two is still slightly awkward, but three-on-three is the magic number," says Paredes.
Alongside expats, Hong Kongers now make up 50 percent of Grouvly's users. In Singapore, most users are locals and there are plans to roll out the service to Japan, South Korea, Australia and China.
"For me, if somebody else likes the guy, they can have them," says Aly, a 24-year-old blogger from the UK and Grouvly regular.
"Ok, they're nice, but I've met them for what, two hours? I'm not going to cry about it."
Aly finds these apps can be as much about making friends as looking for love, with Peekawoo's founder saying this change of focus also allows women to take back control.
"There was one Peekawoo event where a Filipino-American guy offended a Filipina girl by asking her to go home with him," Balace remembered.
"I told her, 'I'm proud of you'. We told the guy what he did was wrong, and we never invited him again."
'Sign of promiscuity'
Even if the Singapore-based Paktor -- which claims 3.5 million registered users -- is less averse to hook ups, it has recently also added functions such as group chats.
"People either organise a group meeting or they reach out to one person in that chat to have a conversation with them," explains Joseph Phua, 31, co-founder of the app.
"It's true that people here tend to be more reserved, less direct," he added. "Asian society feels failure or rejection more strongly, it's just part of the fabric of society. That carries on into the dating space as well."
While apps are being created or tweaked to adapt to tamer local sensibilities, others like China's WeChat can lead to casual trysts with a location-based "Shake" function.
But meeting a partner online in a global hub like Hong Kong still remains less common than in the West -- despite 62.80 percent of people owning a smartphone, according to Google figures.
A 2011 survey led by Emil Ng Man-Lun of Hong Kong University's Family Institute found that just five percent of locals had met a partner online or via an app, compared to 22 percent of Americans, according to Stanford University research published that year.
"Our impression is that this is rising. But by how much it is rising, we are not sure yet," Ng says.
"People think they are a sign of promiscuity. They worry that they get into intimacy too early, without sufficient time for knowing each other. It seems, however, that these theories have not stopped people from using them."

Boy Abunda thanks Kris, Gretchen for their support
MANILA – “What good did I do to deserve the love and friendship of these two girls?”
These were the words of Boy Abunda as he thanked Gretchen Barretto and Kris Aquino for their support when he was recently hospitalized for liver abscess.
Speaking on “The Buzz” on Sunday, Abunda narrated how Barretto and Aquino would make him feel comfortable despite his illness.
“When I was in the hospital, hindi pwedeng pumasok sa kwarto. Pumupunta [si Gretchen] tapos I would hear her voice, ‘Ito ang ulam ha? Ito ang sinigang. Iinitin niyo ito at siya lang ang kakain ha?’ There were days when I would hear her talk, ‘Bakit ang tagal-tagal niya? Ano ba ang paliwanag, ano ba ang sakit?’” Abunda recalled.
Abunda, meanwhile, described Aquino as a “librarian” who prepared the books for him to read and the movies and series for him to watch while at the hospital.
“[Si Gretchen] 'yung type na sa ospital, present and all. Ako nagbibigay ng space. May balance,” Aquino said.
Abunda returned to "The Buzz" on Sunday after weeks of absence due to an illness. Upon his return, he thanked those who wished him well while he was recovering after undergoing an aspiration of the liver abscess.
Now that he is up and about again, Abunda said he aims to live a Christ-centered life.
“Sana hindi na ako maging mayabang sa harap ng Diyos. Sana ipagpatuloy ko 'yung listening to the whisper, listening to him. Kasi
'yun po ang pagkukulang ko, na hindi ho ako nakinig. I was not listening," Abunda admitted.
“I’m looking forward to a life na sentro ang Diyos sa buhay ko dahil sa pagkakataong ito. I’m looking forward to a quieter, simpler life. Pangako ko 'yun,” he said.

Kim open to reconciling with Maja
MANILA, Philippines -- Actress Kim Chiu is not closing her doors on possibility that she and actress Maja Salvador will become friends again.
"Yeah. Siguro huwag natin (ipilit) kasi it's not good parang pilit na 'sige na.' (Hindi maganda) kapag hindi buo ang puso," Chiu said in a taped interview on "KrisTV" that aired on Tuesday.
"Yung iba kasi may kanya-kanyang ang opinion as if sila ang nasa-posisyon mo hindi naman nila alam," she added.
A year ago also on "KrisTV," Chiu and Salvador became emotional as they expressed their love for each other as best of friends.
But in early January, Chiu expressed regret over her "wasted" friendship with Salvador, following reports of a blooming "relationship" between the "Thelma" actress and actor Gerald Anderson.
Chiu and Anderson broke up in 2010 amid controversies surrounding their relationship.
Following speculations on the real score between them, Anderson finally admitted to entertainment magazine StarStudio in its June 2013 issue that he and Salvador are now officially a couple.
Early this month, Chiu said she has forgiven both her erstwhile best friend and ex-boyfriend, but added that it was "difficult to forget."
Salvador, on the other hand, admitted she and Chiu are not yet in talking terms but is hoping to patch things up with her former best friend.
The "KrisTV" interview was taped on June 17, weeks before Chiu's mother passed away.
Just last week, Salvador posted a Twitter message, seemingly in defense of Chiu over an article in a blog, insinuating she didn't take care of her mother when she was still alive.
Netizens took Salvador's plea for "respect" as a sign that she is reaching out to her erstwhile best friend.

Xian says Kim is special in every way
MANILA – After eight months of being together almost every day while working on “Ina Kapatid Anak,” Xian Lim still refused to reveal the real score between him and leading lady Kim Chiu.
In a live interview with “The Buzz” on Sunday, Lim said they do not want to label their “friendship,” saying what’s more important is they are special to each other.
“She is special in every way. Si Kim kapag nakikita ko, parang complete na 'yung araw ko. This past year, every day kami nagkikita. Ang masasabi ko lang, maski pagod kami sa taping, parang nawawala lahat 'yun kapag nakikita ko si Kim,” he said.
He added: “Si Kim kapag nakikita ko, from a scale of one to ten tapos yung scale paikot-ikot pa yun. We don’t want to put any labels to anything. Every friendship is special.”
Lim and Chiu have consistently been linked with each other since they were paired in the ABS-CBN series “My Binondo Girl” in 2012.
‘Ina Kapatid Anak’ success
Meanwhile, both Lim and Chiu are grateful to the unwavering support of their fans for “Ina Kapatid Anak.”
“Nakaka-amaze ang pagtanggap nila sa amin. We are happy na nabibigay naming 'yung ine-expect nila. [Mamimiss ko 'yung] waking up every morning, naging routine na namin eh,” Lim said.
“Happy ako na nagawa ko ang 'Ina Kapatid Anak,' natapos ko siya. Nagpapasalamat ako sa suporta ng mga tao,” Chiu added.
“Ina Kapatid Anak” is currently the most watched television program in the country. The June 6 episode of "Ina, Kapatid, Anak" marked a sharp rise in the primetime series' national TV ratings, with a 6-percentage-point increase from its previous telecast.
According to the latest TV ratings data from multinational market research group Kantar Media, the program dubbed "Ang Teleserye ng Pamilyang Pilipino" garnered a nationwide rating of 39.6% last Thursday, making it the No. 1 TV show across the country.
“Ina Kapatid Anak” is now down to its final week.

Cristalle Heneras now being linked to Derek
MANILA, Philippines – Celebrity doctor Vicki Belo has no problem about actor Derek Ramsay being romantically linked to her daughter, Cristalle Henares.
But Belo maintained that Henares and Ramsay share nothing but a close friendship.
“They’re both very athletic so they hang out together. Pero wala namang yatang romance sa pagkakaalam ko. Baka may secret, hindi ko alam,” she said.
Henares also denied that she has a romantic relationship with the actor, saying she is just close to Ramsay’s family.
“As a matter of fact, nung new year pumunta kami sa Bukidnon together with his family, tapos nag-Palawan kami last month. Pero nothing more than a sister talaga,” she said.
Another reason they always see each other is because Ramsay is an endorser of the Belo Sun Expert, Henares pointed out.
“Derek and I have been working together also dahil siya din ang isang endorser namin. Baka naisip lang ng tao na baka may nangyayari kasi parati kaming nagkikita, pero wala talaga,” she said.
Asked for a message to those who see something more to their closeness, Henares said: “Hindi naman ako showbiz, hindi naman ako sanay dito. At least sa amin, between us, we know the truth. There’s nothing wrong being linked to each other, pareho naman kaming single, ‘di ba? Wala namang naapektuhan na iba.”
Henares used to be in a relationship with Azkals defender Jason Sabio. Ramsay, on the other hand, has been linked to actress Cristine Reyes after his break-up with actress Angelica Panganiban.

Gerald reacts to Kim-Sarah 'friendship'
Actor addresses 'heartbreaker' tag
MANILA, Philippines – Gerald Anderson distanced himself from the reported growing friendship between two women previously romantically linked to him.
Shortly after his Best Actor win at the 10th Golden Screen Awards night on Friday, the 23-year-old Kapamilya actor addressed the publicized friendly encounter between Kim Chiu and Sarah Geronimo, who both had a romantic relationship with Anderson at different times.
"Wala na po ako doon. Silang dalawa na lang ang tanungin niyo. Pero we should be happy for each other, sa lahat," Anderson told reporters on Friday.
Last Sunday, photos of Chiu and Geronimo sharing a hug shortly after the finals night of the songwriting contest Handog P-Pop Love Songs made the rounds online.
Chiu, who was in a relationship with Anderson until 2010, referred to the meeting as unexpected. "Ang gaan sa pakiramdam," she said.
Geronimo, who was openly courted by the actor until their controversial falling out in August last year, said she had wanted to give Chiu a hug as a way of comforting her after a recent controversy involving Anderson and actress Maja Salvador.
Anderson has openly expressed his intentions to court Salvador, Chiu's former best friend and co-star in the drama series "Ina, Kapatid, Anak."
"Dapat naman tayong maging peaceful," Anderson said on Friday, when asked if he has likewise found "peace" like Chiu and Geronimo. “Kumbaga, ang dami ngang gulo sa buong mundo eh. Tayu-tayo pa."
The actor, however, refused to comment when asked if he wishes Salvador and Chiu to reconcile after their alleged falling out over him.
Asked for his reaction to being tagged as a "heartbreaker" and a "playboy," Anderson said, "Hindi ko masagot, dahil alam ko naman po 'yung totoo. Alam ko rin po [na] nakakagawa ako ng mali sa buhay ko."
“I’ve made mistakes, I’ve learned from [them]. Pero kumbaga, alam ko kung ano 'yung mali na 'yun. Iyon lang po ang masasabi ko," he said.
Sharing his intent to learn from his "mistakes," the actor added, "'Yung mga mata natin, nasa harapan ng ulo natin. Kasi you just have to look forward and not look backward, 'di ba? So just learn from mistakes and go forth.”

For Piolo, Diether, respect key to lasting friendship
MANILA, Philippines – Actors Piolo Pascual and Diether Ocampo both agreed that the key to a lasting friendship is having mutual respect for each other.
In an interview with “Showbiz Inside Report” aired on Saturday, both actors said they never thought their friendship would come a long way.
Both are members of the first “ASAP” boy group The Hunks along with Jericho Rosales, Carlos Agassi and Bernard Palanca.
According to Pascual, he considers Ocampo as one of his brothers in show business.
“Si Diet napakatahimik na tao. Sa maraming taon na magkasama kami, kaya niyang i-keep sa sarili niya, diretso siyang kausap. Bilang isa sa mga kuya namin sa Star Magic, maganda 'yung example na pinapakita niya sa kabataan,” he said.
Ocampo, for his part, admires Pascual’s headstrong personality through tough times.
“May sarili ring mundo ‘to eh. Pero ‘yun 'yung part na nadi-discover ninyo na may similarities kayo, may common interests kayo... PJ, I can also say the same thing, marami rin siyang pinagdaanan, pero I admire him na he was able to rise above the challenges sa buhay niya,” he said.
Asked what they would do if The Hunks members fall in love with the same girl, Pascual said: “Masyadong maliit ‘yung mundo natin sa showbiz ‘di ba?”
“Siguro respeto lang sa isa’t isa, ganoon talaga. Kapag may mga ganyan, as much as possible, hindi pinag-uusapan,” he added.
As for Ocampo, he said: “No, those are things na better left unsaid. May mga bagay na parang… like he said, may mutual respect kami sa isa’t isa, may mga bagay na parang… ah okay, kung mas masaya siya doon…”
According to “Showbiz Inside Report,” Pascual was once romantically linked to actress Rica Peralejo, who was once with Palanca.
Ocampo, on the other hand, entered into a relationship with actress Kristine Hermosa, who was Rosales’ previous girlfriend.
Pascual and Ocampo are currently promoting their upcoming series "Apoy Sa Dagat." Also starring Angelica Panganiban, the primetime series will hit the TV screens starting February 11.
