Fireworks injuries rise to 186 before New Year

MANILA – Philippine officials Monday reported more injuries from fireworks as the emergency services braced for a night of thunderous and sometimes deadly merrymaking to usher in the new year.

Injuries linked to firecrackers have risen to 186 since the Christmas weekend, including 33 with eye injuries and six victims who had limbs amputated, the health department announced.

The number stood at 171 on Sunday.

Casualties are expected to peak as the revelry hits a crescendo at midnight, said Emmanuel Bello, emergency ward chief at East Avenue Medical Center, one of Manila's biggest state hospitals that has treated 22 cases.

"Most of the adult casualties stem from drunkenness. They drink and then they set off firecrackers," said Bello, who has called in all of the hospital's more than 100 burns, orthopaedic and emergency care specialists.

"If they lose their thumbs and index fingers they lose most of the functions of their hand and so they are unable to work, condemning their families to hardship," Bello, a bone surgeon, told AFP.

However the majority of casualties are children aged 10 or younger who may be unaware of the dangers of fireworks, he added.

The health department said one person was also wounded by a stray bullet, likely from the Filipino tradition of celebratory gunfire in the air.

Filipino families celebrate Christmas and New Year by buying and setting off large quantities of fireworks which emit ear-splitting noise and black powder smoke, causing some communities to resemble war zones.

The government reported 454 firecracker-related injuries as 2012 was welcomed in.

National police chief Alan Purisima said the capital's slums were being closely watched because of the threat of blazes from wayward fireworks.

President Benigno Aquino's spokesman Ramon Carandang, commenting on Twitter Monday, pleaded: "New Year-related injuries will peak in the next 24 hours. Don't be a statistic. Party on... but do it safely."

Alumni from Cateel schools host New Year party for residents

MANILA, Philippines - The Ordiz family has no money to buy food for their media noche which is why they are thankful that alumni from schools in Cateel arrived to host a New Year party.

“Kahit medyo malungkot pero pag nakita ko yung mga bata na masaya, masaya na din ako,” said Lanie Ordiz.

Relief goods were distributed and games were organized for the children. The group also offered prayers for those who passed away in the tragedy. They lit candles and residents sang songs for the recovery of the province.

They also released sky lanterns along with the residents.

“Yung ginawa nila parang nagbigay sa amin na may pagasa talaga ang buhay,” said Imelda Reyes.

Although the volunteers now live in different places, they were able to organize themselves using social media to give hope to the typhoon victims.

“Sino ba yung magtutulong-tulungan dapat kaming mga taga-Cateel mismo,” said Olan Emboscado, president of Help Cateel.

Meantime it will be quiet New Year in Cateel with the town banning the use of firecrackers to welcome 2013.

Matt Damon tackles 'fracking' issue in 'Promised Land'

LOS ANGELES - The hot-button topic of "fracking" has finally made its way to Hollywood in the new movie "Promised Land," out in U.S. theaters on Friday, with actors Matt Damon and John Krasinski teaming up to further the debate on the energy drilling technique.

The film explores the social impact of hydraulic fracturing drilling technique, or "fracking," which has sparked nation-wide environmental and political battles over its impact on drinking water, U.S. energy use, seismic activity and other areas.

"Promised Land" will see Damon, 42, reunite with director Gus Van Sant for the third time, following their success with 1997 film "Good Will Hunting and 2002's "Gerry."

In their latest film, Damon plays a corporate salesman who goes to a rural U.S. town to buy or lease land on behalf of a gas company looking to drill for oil. He soon faces opposition from a slick environmentalist, played by Krasinski.

In real life, Damon hasn't shied away from getting involved in political and social issues, working with charities and organizations to eradicate AIDS in developing countries, bringing attention to atrocities in Sudan's Darfur region, providing safe drinking water and stopping trees from being chopped and used for junk mail.

Yet "Promised Land," which Damon also co-wrote and produced, doesn't take a noticeable stance on "fracking." The actor would not publicly state his own views, telling Reuters that he didn't think his opinion had "any bearing" on the film.

"The point is that the movie should start a conversation. It's certainly not a pro-fracking movie, but we didn't want to tell people what to think," Damon said.

The actor said he and Krasinski never set out to make a socially conscious film, and "fracking" was added in later, as a backdrop to the story.

"It wasn't that we said we wanted to make a movie about 'fracking' as much as we wanted to make a movie about American identity, about real people. We wanted to make a movie about the country today, where we came from, where we are and where we are headed," Damon said.

"'Fracking' was perfect because the stakes are so incredibly high and people are so divided. It asks all the questions about short-term thinking versus long-term thinking."

Hydraulic fracturing entails pumping water laced with chemicals and sand at high pressure into shale rock formations to break them up and unleash hydrocarbons. Critics worry that "fracking" fluids or hydrocarbons can still leak into water tables from wells, or above ground.

FROM 'ADJUSTMENT BUREAU' TO 'PROMISED LAND'

At first glance, the pairing of Damon with Krasinski may not come across as the perfect fit, as Damon has primarily been associated with longtime friend and collaborator Ben Affleck, both of whom won Oscars for writing "Good Will Hunting."

Damon later become a colleague and friend to a number of key Hollywood players, including George Clooney and Brad Pitt, with whom he co-starred in the "Ocean's Eleven" franchise.

Krasinski, 33, is best known for playing sardonic Jim Halpert on NBC's long-running television series, "The Office," and has had occasional supporting roles in films such as 2008's "Leatherheads."

Damon and Krasinski came together after meeting through Krasinski's wife, Emily Blunt, who co-starred with Damon in the 2011 film "The Adjustment Bureau." Damon said he and his wife started double-dating with Krasinski and Blunt, through which their collaboration on "Promised Land" came about.

The duo's busy work schedules forced them to moonlight on weekends to make "Promised Land."

"John showed up at my house every Saturday at breakfast and we would write all day until dinner," Damon said. "Then we'd do it again on Sunday. I have four kids so he would come to me."

But Damon's determination to make the film his feature directorial debut fell through when his acting schedule changed, making it impossible to direct "Promised Land," so he turned to Van Sant.

"My first inclination was to send the script to somebody I'd worked with before," he said. "Gus seemed like the most obvious choice and I realized later that I'd never written anything that anyone else had directed, except Gus. I have a real comfort level with him."

Damon said he has not given up on his dream of directing movies and has his eye on a project at movie studio Warner Bros., which has a deal with Damon and Affleck's joint production company, Pearl Street Films.

With Affleck's third directorial effort "Argo" becoming an awards contender, Damon joked that the film's success can only be a good thing for his own budding directing career.

"I now happen to be partnered with the hottest director in Hollywood!" he said, laughing.

Nike Lunar Rift Racer

Though the barefoot essence has been channeled into the Free line and various neoprene-uppered runners, the Air Rift remains one of Nike Sportswear’s most peculiar classics.  With far more womens colorways available in recent years than mens, this ‘mitten’ of a velcro-strapped slip-on has all but faded out of the recurring lineup.  The new Nike Lunar Rift Racer seeks changes in that status in more, offering a more traditional split-less toe atop a LunarLon cushion that’s as light as the featherweight elastic upper.  Atomic Teal will be a popular color for SS13, so stick with Sneaker News to see more from the Lunar Rift Racer and let us know what you think of this first one after you’ve seen them from more angles.

HOUSTON  — Former President George H.W. Bush's condition continued to improve Saturday, prompting doctors to move him out of intensive care, a spokesman said.

"President Bush's condition has improved, so he has been moved today from the intensive care unit to a regular patient room at The Methodist Hospital to continue his recovery," family spokesman Jim McGrath said Saturday. "The Bushes thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes."

Spurs' lead trio ground Rockets in win

San Antonio's Big Three delivered a vintage performance to lift the Spurs to a 122-116 victory over Houston on Friday.

Tony Parker had 31 points and 10 assists, Tim Duncan scored 30 points while Manu Ginobili added 23 off the bench in an outburst that was reminiscent of performances when the Spurs won four titles from 1999-2007.

San Antonio snatched a 41-29 lead after the first quarter then had to hold off Houston as the Rockets' James Harden (33 points) and Jeremy Lin (21) helped them pull close in the second and third quarters before losing ground in the final period as their five-game win streak was snapped.

San Antonio (23-8) led just 101-97 early in the fourth before going on an 11-0 run.

Houston shot 52 percent from the field but were outdone by the deadly accurate Spurs who made 57 percent of their shots and knocked down 12 three-pointers.

Angel admits 'plans' with Phil

MANILA, Philippines -- For the first time, Angel Locsin and Phil Younghusband addressed together questions on possibly tying the knot in the near future.

The celebrity couple arrived together at the 38th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Awards Night held Thursday at the Meralco Theater in Ortigas.

The Kapamilya actress stars in one of the competing entries in the film fest, the family drama "One More Try."

Shortly before the awarding ceremony, entertainment media at the event asked Locsin and the Philippine football team player on whether they are now planning their wedding.

"Wala pa, plans pa lang, pero walang wedding," Locsin said.

The 27-year-old actress and the 25-year-old star striker have been officially a couple since May this year.

In earlier interviews, Younghusband referred to Locsin as his "true love," and expressed his intention of "having a future with Angel."

Referring to early buzz favoring her to win the Best Actress award -- Nora Aunor was given the honor for her "Thy Womb" portrayal later that night -- Locsin admitted to being nervous, "[pero] kasama ko naman si Phil."

"Sabi ko sa kanya siya naman ang nagbibigay sa 'kin ng luck," the actress said.

"Pero ma-nominate ka lang kasama nila, at makagawa ka ng pelikula na sobrang overwhelming 'yung response ng mga tao, sobrang 'yun palang nagpapasalamat na ako dun eh," she added.

Amid their packed schedule, the couple managed to spend Christmas Day together.

"December 24, I was with my sister, my brother, and then 25th I was with Angel, so we got to spend Christmas together," Younghusband said. "Masaya, it's always happy with Angel."

Pope turns to Twitter, new allies to battle for faith issues

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI has galvanized Catholics at the close of 2012 to go on the offensive over key faith issues, forging new alliances and fighting secularism in the West with a media campaign.

Damaging sex abuse scandals and growing opposition to the Church's attitude toward gay marriage and women priests have forced Benedict to rethink how to communicate with the modern world and stem the flood of deserting believers.

The 85-year-old pope joined Twitter this month as part of efforts to disseminate the Catholic message worldwide, which also forced the professorial pontiff to reduce his usual reams of dense theological reflections to 140 characters.

The Vatican in June hired American Fox News correspondent Greg Burke to help modernise its communications strategy and by December Benedict had sent his first tweet which went out in eight languages to thousands of followers.

The pope's tweets of faith may have sparked derision among some Twitter users, but they brought the Vatican widespread visibility among the digital generation, which was told that God is not dead but "knocking at the door."

The leader of the world's one billion Roman Catholics also took the unusual step of writing an editorial for Britain's Financial Times newspaper, urging business and political leaders to adhere to Christian ethics and moral codes in their daily lives.

Benedict's call to take a stand against what he views as society's ills -- such as consumerism and a wilful disregard of "traditional" family values -- was repeated in his strongly-worded Christmas message which slammed the selfishness of modernity.

"We want ourselves. We want what we can seize hold of, we want happiness that is within our reach. We are so 'full' of ourselves that there is no room left for God. And that means there is no room for others either," he said.

The pope also began in earnest to follow through with one of the key ideas of his papacy, calling for dialogue with atheists, agnostics and others outside the Catholic Church who are nonetheless fighting the same battles.

In a bid against gay marriage which is gaining ground in the West, he took the first steps in finding new allies.

With France, Britain and the United States soon expected to join a dozen countries where same-sex couples can legally wed, Benedict reached out to religious and non-religious people alike who respect what he called the "law of nature".

Weighing into the heated debate, the pope cited France's chief Rabbi Gilles Bernheim, who has spoken out against gay marriage.

Benedict has also mobilised top Catholic figures to beat the drum on the Church's teachings on social issues, from the family to homosexuality and abortion.

The Vatican's new guardian of dogma, Germany's Gerhard Muller, Milan's Archbishop Angelo Scola, and Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, the pope's culture minister who is a keen Tweeter, are among those who have gone on the offensive.

"A small but influential group of bishops has formed around Benedict XVI and pays a great deal of attention to addressing the central questions of culture and society with weighty words," Vatican expert Sandro Magister told AFP.

The truth (in buying) shall set you (financially) free

Question: I have time and again found myself buying stuff that I don’t really need because of sales offers and gimmicks, especially during the Christmas season. What is the best way to avoid unwanted spending?—Heavy holiday season shopper

Answer: I recently went to a trade exhibit to conduct a talk on the basics of money management. After the talk, I walked around the exhibit to get a glimpse of what was being sold.

From time to time, people would approach me offering their flyers. My usual reaction would be to smile and politely beg off. But there was this lady who was hurriedly going through the crowd of exhibit patrons giving away ordinary ball pens, not flyers.

My knee jerk reaction was to turn the offer down. But being the “El Cheapo” that I am, I decided to accept the free ball pens; after all, she was giving away not just one but two of them. I knew there was a catch.  But I decided to play along.

She said she would need me to sign the attendance sheet at their exhibit booth. So I dutifully followed her to their booth. There she showed me a gadget that help kill the bacteria on foods that we eat raw like vegetables (for fresh garden salads) and fruits. While the gadget looked neat, I felt it was something I could do without.

The lady then proceeded to show me an induction stove. This got my attention a bit because it was something that would look nice in our kitchen; not that we have space for it. But it was so expensive that it would take nine long years before the cost of the stove would match the savings on doing away with LPG.

As I asked for the attendance sheet, the lady requested me to sit down inside the booth. The lady kept on asking me for the province where I came from. Having been born and raised in Metro Manila, I told her I was from Quezon City. On cue, the lady expressed amazement and hugged me just because I said I was from Quezon City. I am sure she would have expressed the same amazement no matter what my answer would have been. She said that because I was from Quezon City, I would be getting a 24” LED TV for free because it was a “sponsored” product.

She then asked me how long I had lived in Quezon City. When I said since birth, she hugged me again with this flabbergasted look on her face and said that because I had lived long in Quezon City, I would also be getting a stainless cookware set for free. She then introduced me to her supervisor who displayed the same excitement. This time, everybody in the booth joined in and sort of ganged up on me to ensure my interest.

When the supervisor found out that I was from Quezon City, he offered me another free “sponsored” product, a medium-sized washing machine. At this point, things resembled the show “the Price Is Right” because as they would announce a freebie, one of the staff would “wheel in” the item while the first lady I met would give me a hug.

So what was the catch? I had to buy the induction stove for tens of thousands of pesos. To further coax me into buying, the supervisor showed me, albeit unethically, the credit card charge slip of a previous customer. It was funny at that time because here I was, just after giving a talk on money management, and there they were inviting me to splurge on something that had not even entered my mind.

This was the time I decided to end the show by saying I already had many of the “sponsored” items they were offering. Moreover, I was not about to spend tens of thousands of pesos on something that was not programmed into my budget. I politely said I would think about their offer and proceeded to walk away. And don’t worry, I walked away with the two ball pens in hand.

Here’s the thing. I quickly checked the Internet for the price of the induction stove. I saw the exact same model being sold at half the price and with a stainless cookware set already bundled. That means I would still be paying for the supposed free “sponsored” products.

The people I met were trained to do hyped-up selling by the promoters of the product. They were just trying to earn a living.

Remember that a legitimate transaction can only happen between a willing seller and a willing buyer. Even if the sales pitch was not truly attractive, it would be the buyer’s responsibility to check on the facts.

So how should you approach hyped-up selling? Just answer the following simple questions before you buy:

1.) Does the product fall under “must spend” or “may spend”? The first category includes utilities, basic food, clothing, shelter, savings and investments. Things falling under “may spend” include entertainment expenses, vices and gadgets.

2.) If the product falls under must-spend, can it be postponed or not? If yes, provide for it in your budget for the future. If not, how do you expect to fund its purchase? Consider the outflow for principal and interest payments. The outflow should fit in your current budget. If not, you will need to cut down on the “must spends.”

3.) If the product falls under may-spend, see if you have extra funds after providing for all of your must-spends. If yes, go ahead and enjoy the product. If not, postpone the purchase until you have excess funds. Minimize, if not totally avoid, borrowings.

To help you become financially free, find out the truth behind a product, especially when promotion is hyped up.

Facebook founder's sister tripped by privacy settings

SAN FRANCISCO, California - Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg's sister evidently tripped on the social network's privacy settings, landing in the midst of a debate on Wednesday about "online etiquette."

Randi Zuckerberg, who launched a Silicon Valley themed online reality show after quitting her job handling Facebook public relations, kicked off the controversy after a family photo intended for friends went public.

The picture, copies of which were at Buzzfeed.com and elsewhere on the Internet, showed Mark Zuckerberg in a kitchen with family members dramatizing reactions to messages sent with a freshly launched "Poke" feature at Facebook.

Poke lets people send messages that self-destruct in what is seen by many as a spin on popular smartphone application Snapchat.

Some have joked that Poke is a boon for "sexting" risqué pictures because senders can have them quickly erased.

Randi Zuckerberg posted a copy of the family photo to Facebook for the eyes of close friends only, but evidently it was also shared with friends of those tagged in the picture due to privacy settings at the social network.

That meant the fun photo popped up in the news feed of someone outside Randi Zuckerberg's circle, who then shared it on popular messaging service Twitter.

From there, the photo went viral -- much to Randi Zuckerberg's chagrin.

"Digital etiquette: always ask permission before posting a friend's photo publicly," Mark Zuckerberg's elder sister said in a Christmas tweet. "It's not just about privacy settings, it's about human decency."

The comment sparked heated debate at Twitter and other online forums, where a vocal contingent saw poetic justice in Zuckerbergs being exposed by the way the social network handles the privacy of users.

"How terrible that someone might take something that belongs to you and use it in ways that you had not anticipated, and for which you had not given explicit permission," Dan Lyons said facetiously in a post at ReadWrite.com.

"What kind of world are we living in when just because you post something on a website, someone else can take just take that stuff and do things with it?" he asked rhetorically before finishing with "Oh, wait..."

In a Twitter message on Wednesday, Randi Zuckerberg said the topic of online etiquette elicits "passion, debate, anger & Twitter crazies" to the extent that it might be the subject of her next show.

Pinay DH nabbed, accused of rape in Dubai

MANILA, Philippines – A Filipina household service worker was arrested after her sponsor accused her of sexually abusing her children in Dubai.

The Gulf News reported that the OFW had been accused of having sex with the 8-year-old son of her sponsor. She was also accused of forcing the boy to have sex with his 12-year-old sister.

"There is such a report and it also appeared sa diario dito sa Dubai at yun nga, yung kababayan natin na isang kasambahay dito ay inakusahan ng kanyang sponsor ng rape doon sa mga anak niya na alaga ng kasambahay na ito," confirmed Philippine Consul General Frank Cimafranca.

Cimafranca told DZMM on Friday that an Assistant To Nationals (ATN) officer was able to visit the OFW who is currently in a detention center.

“Of course, itinatanggi niya yung akusasyon dahil kung isipin mo naman ay napakamurang edad yung mga bata---8 years old at yung isa 12 years old--parang di kapani-paniwala yung akusasyon,” Cimafranca said.

However, he added that the consulate could not do anything at this point as the case is still being investigated.

"Wala pa tayong masyadong magawa dahil the case is still under investigation at pag ang kaso ay under investigation ang patakaran dito sa bansang ito, sa UAE, ay hindi pwedeng makialam yung mga abugado at yung konsulado kasi iniimbistigahan pa ng pulis at ng prosecutorial office," he said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila had been informed of the case and is ready to provide legal assistance once the case against the Pinay is filed in court.

Based on their records, the Pinay was deployed to Dubai in May 2011. She ranaway from her sponsor four months later.

“May previous case itong katulong na ito na ikinomplain niya yung kanyang sponsor. Nag runaway last year, inayos ng agency at saka yung sponsor at voluntary din naman daw na bumalik doon sa sponsor itong kasambahay na ito,” he said.

The OFW's recruitment agency in Dubai has been suspended and is also a subject of their investigation.

China tightens Internet controls, legalizes post deletion

BEIJING - China unveiled tighter Internet controls on Friday, legalising the deletion of posts or pages which are deemed to contain "illegal" information and requiring service providers to hand over such information to the authorities for punishment.

The rules signal that the new leadership headed by Communist Party chief Xi Jinping will continue muzzling the often scathing, raucous online chatter in a country where the Internet offers a rare opportunity for debate.

The new regulations, announced by the official Xinhua news agency, also require Internet users to register with their real names when signing up with network providers, though, in reality, this already happens.

Chinese authorities and Internet companies such as Sina Corp have long since closely monitored and censored what people say online, but the government has now put measures such as deleting posts into law.

"Service providers are required to instantly stop the transmission of illegal information once it is spotted and take relevant measures, including removing the information and saving records, before reporting to supervisory authorities," the rules state.

The restrictions follow a series of corruption scandals amongst lower-level officials exposed by Internet users, something the government has said it is trying to encourage.

Chinese Internet users already cope with extensive censorship measures, especially over politically sensitive topics like human rights and elite politics, and popular foreign sites Facebook, Twitter and Google-owned YouTube are blocked.

Earlier this year, the government began forcing users of Sina's wildly successful Weibo microblogging platform to register their real names.

The new rules were quickly condemned by some Weibo users.

"So now they are getting Weibo to help in keeping records and reporting it to authorities. Is this the freedom of expression we are promised in the constitution?" complained one user.

"We should resolutely oppose such a covert means to interfere with Internet freedom," wrote another.

The government says tighter monitoring of the Internet is needed to prevent people making malicious and anonymous accusations online, disseminating pornography and spreading panic with unfounded rumours, pointing out that many other countries already have such rules.

Despite periodic calls for political reform, the party has shown no sign of loosening its grip on power and brooks no dissent to its authority.

Kris' cleavage-baring dress sends netizens abuzz

MANILA, Philippines -- Apart from the big winners at the recently concluded 38th Metro Manila Film Festival awards night, Kris Aquino's revealing gown was also the talk of the town on social media on Thursday night.

Aquino and KC Concepcion hosted the awarding ceremony of the annual film fest at the Meralco Theater in Ortigas. The actress also stars in one of the competing entries, "Sisterakas," along with Vice Ganda and Ai Ai delas Alas.

In a post on the image-sharing site Instagram on Friday, Aquino is seen posing in the cleavage-baring dress, which she credited to designer Cary Santiago.

As the delayed telecast of the awards night aired Friday, viewers took to micro-blogging site Twitter to rave about Aquino's bold fashion choice.

Several netizens called the gown "daring," while others joked that her outfit deserved an "award" of its own. Most of the "tweets" were posted with the hashtag "MMFFAwardsNight," which became among the top local trending topics on Friday night.

Donaire is ESPN's Boxer of the Year

Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire was the "easy pick" for ESPN's "Boxer of the Year" after a sensational 2012 that saw him solidify his position as one of the sport's top pound-for-pound fighters.

Donaire, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and RING super bantamweight champion, was named Boxer of the Year by ESPN, beating other top contenders including Juan Manuel Marquez, Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero.

"It might sound strange, but no, Manny Pacquiao was not the best fighter from the Philippines in 2012,” wrote ESPN’s Dan Rafael. "That honor goes to 'The Filipino Flash,' junior featherweight titlist Nonito Donaire, who had a year for the ages."

"Donaire (31-1, 20 KOs) began the year having vacated his bantamweight belts and preparing to move up to junior featherweight. Four fights later, in an exceptionally busy year by modern standards for an elite champion, the quick-fisted and powerful Donaire stands atop the 122-pound division," Rafael wrote.

Rafael said Donaire "was the easy pick for 2012 ESPN.com Boxer of the Year."

"Donaire easily handled the move up in weight, winning all four of his fights in dominant fashion. He dropped each of his foes – scoring seven knockdowns in all – won twice by knockout and collected two world titles," Rafael wrote.

'The Philippines' best boxer'

In his first fight of the year, Donaire defeated Puerto Rico's Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. by split decision to claim the vacant WBO belt. He then decisioned South Africa's Jeffrey Mathebula in July to claim the International Boxing Federation belt.

In October, Donaire knocked out top Japanese boxer Toshiaki Nishioka in the ninth round, then capped off his year with a sensational third round knockout of Mexican warrior Jorge Arce last December 15.

"It was the exclamation point on a year in which Donaire seized the mantle from Pacquiao, his idol, as the Philippines' best boxer and continued to assert himself as one of the best fighters in the world, period," Rafael wrote.

Rafael also commended Donaire for being the first and only boxer in the world to undergo random drug testing with the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association on a year-round basis.

"This in an era when every great performance unfortunately comes under the suspicion of possible
performance-enhancing drug use – except, of course, Donaire's," he said.

Donaire becomes the second Filipino fighter to claim the award, after Pacquiao, who won in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Edged Marquez, Garcia

Mexico's Marquez became a contender for the Boxer of the Year award after his stunning sixth-round knockout of Pacquiao in their fourth encounter last December 7, a punch that Rafael called "the shot heard 'round the world."

"In the most stunning scene of the year, Marquez earned the first definitive result in his epic four-fight series with Pacquiao," he wrote. "Marquez may trail the all-time series 2-1-1, but the knockout in their welterweight fight is the most memorable moment from the four fights."

Rafael also noted that the knockout was "one of the most significant moments in boxing in recent years."

Undefeated American Danny Garcia was also a contender for Boxer of the Year after winning all three of his fights in 2012. He decisioned Mexican legend Erik Morales in March, knocked out Amir Khan in July, and then knocked out Morales in their rematch in October.

Meanwhile, Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero also had a strong 2012 after proving himself to be a true contender at the welterweight division. Guerrero defeated Selcuk Aydin and the decisioned former champion Andre Berto.

Another Filipino fighter, Brian "The Hawaiian Punch" Viloria, was also a contender for Boxer of the Year.

"'The Hawaiian Punch' scored knockouts against quality opponents in both of his 2012 fights. In May, Viloria retained his flyweight title by stopping Omar Nino Romero in the ninth round to exact revenge from a previous loss and no-contest,” Rafael wrote.

"In November, in an exceptional fight, Viloria stopped Hernan 'Tyson' Marquez to unify 112-pound titles."

Criminal case against Globe Asiatique a separate issue - Pag-IBIG

MANILA, Philippines - Pag-IBIG Fund on Tuesday said any ruling on the civil case it filed against Globe Asiatique's Delfin Lee and co-defendants does not have any bearing on the criminal case against them.

"I am compelled to clarify that whatever the decision may be in that civil case, it will not be prejudicial to the criminal case for syndicated estafa we filed earlier against Delfin Lee and his co-defendants," Darlene Marie B. Berberabe, chief executive officer at Pag-IBIG Fund, said in a statement.

Berberabe was reacting to news reports saying a Makati Trial Court recently ruled in favor of Globe Asiatique over civil cases filed by the Pag-IBIG Fund against the property firm.

"As of today (December 26), we have yet to receive our copy of the alleged decision," Berberabe said.

She explained that the Court of Appeals in April already ruled that regardless of the resolution of the civil case filed in the Makati court, it will not extinguish any criminal liability Delfin Lee and his co-defendants will be found to have.

"Assuming there is an adverse decision, Pag-IBIG will undertake the necessary legal remedies in order to question the same before the higher courts," Berberabe said.

"The resolutions of the issues in this civil case are far from being final and executory. Pag-IBIG is confident that in the end, justice will prevail. And we shall shall remain vigilant in protecting the Fund and its members," she added.

Michu set for Spain debut

MADRID, Spain - Swansea City's free-scoring striker Michu is set to make his Spain debut early next year following a sensational start to his career in the English Premier League.

Vicente del Bosque, coach of European and world champions Spain, told Spanish television that the 26-year-old will play in the Feb. 6 friendly against Uruguay in Doha.

Michu will be joined in the Spain squad by Iago Aspas, currently being linked to Swansea, whose manager Michael Laudrup is an admirer of the Celta Vigo forward.

"Iago Aspas and Michu will appear (against Uruguay)," confirmed Del Bosque.

Michu has been prolific since his bargain $3.2 million transfer from Rayo Vallecano in the summer, topping the Premier League scoring charts with 13 goals in 18 games.

He leap-frogged Manchester United's Robin van Persie after scoring the equaliser in Sunday's 1-1 home draw against the league leaders.

Aspas may well be on Laudrup's wish-list for the January transfer window but the expected price tag of around $13 million could put Swansea off.

Levi Johnston TRIPPIN' OUT In Family Christmas Photo

Bristol Palin's DNA will always have a special place in Levi Johnston's Christmas family photo ... at least in the form of the ex-couple's son Tripp, who made a red-sweater'd cameo in this year's snapshot.

The photo was taken last week for the Johnston family Christmas card inside Levi's Wasilla, Alaska home -- and it looks like everyone agreed to wear some kind of plaid ... or argyle ... except for Levi's new wife Sunny Oglesby.

As we first reported, Levi is strongly considering a move to get full custody of Tripp -- believing Bristol is a bad parent ... letting Tripp run amok at home ... talking back, cursing, and disrespecting his elders.

So far, Levi hasn't filed any official paperwork.

Chiz won't stop Heart from having kissing scenes

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero said he will never stop his girlfriend Heart Evangelista from having kissing scenes in her future showbiz projects.

Speaking to entertainment website Pep.ph during the premiere night of Evangelista’s new movie “Sosy Problems,” Escudero said he is in no position to tell his girlfriend on what she can or cannot do in her work.

The senator said Evangelista definitely has the qualities of what he is looking for in a long-term partner.

"Anybody in a relationship would want to have that. Sobrang lambing niya," he said.

Meanwhile, with just Christmas around the corner, Escudero shared how he and Evangelista are planning to spend the holidays.

"We'll be spending it with the family. We're going to see each other later during the week,” he said.

Stocks extend gains, buck regional downturn

MANILA, Philippines–Local stocks extended gains for a fourth session on Friday, bucking a regional downturn on the back of a positive credit rating outlook by Standard & Poor’s and some yearend window-dressing.

The main-share Philippine Stock Exchange index gained 26.2 points or 0.45 percent to close at 5,823.94.  The index hit as high as 5,860.12 in intra-day trade – very close to the all-time intra-day peak of 5,866.83 – but pared down gains instead of breaking into new highs.

‘‘Being the last day before Christmas, this is truly a Santa Claus rally.  Now I look forward to the January effect,’’ said Gus Cosio, president of mutual fund management firm First Metro Asset Management Inc.

The local market shrugged off regional concerns over a stalled budget deal that would have addressed the US’ fiscal cliff by yearend.  Without such a deal, a series of mandated tax increases and spending cuts could push the US to another recession.

The day’s biggest gainers were JG Summit (+3.16 percent), SM Prime (+2.23 percent), Metrobank (+2.06 percent), DMCI (+2 percent) and SMIC (+1.83 percent), Belle (+1.67 percent) and  PLDT (+1.18 percent). BDO, BPI and ICTSI also contributed to the day’s gains.

The day’s most actively traded stock was Atok-Big Wedge, which rose by 31.74 percent. Atok disclosed that it had sold 180 million shares to offshore equity funds, boosting its public float to 10.05 percent and thereby meeting the minimum requirement for continuing listing on the Philippine Stock Exchange.

On the other hand, there was profit-taking on ALI, AC, Globe, EDC, MPI, AEV and AP. Among the second-liners, Vista Land and Puregold also closed lower.

PDIC, LandBank team up for insurance claim payment system

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp. and Land Bank of the Philippines have signed a memorandum of agreement for new schemes for the payment of deposit insurance claims.

In a statement, PDIC said depositors may now be paid through the issuance of a LandBank-issued manager's check or by transferring funds to their LandBank accounts.

"[These are] both aimed at providing convenience and security to depositors," PDIC said.

PDIC acts as a receiver and liquidator of shuttered banks. Thus, the agency is the one responsible for the settlement of deposit insurance, the maximum coverage of which is P500,000 per depositor.

The new schemes add to the other means of claiming deposit insurance payments such as through cash cards or cash-over-the-counter.

"The PDIC continues to conduct process and systems reviews to enhance its core operations particularly in implementing convenient deposit insurance payment schemes to better serve depositors of closed banks," the agency said.

Kristine Hermosa makes surprise public appearance

MANILA, Philippines -- Kristine Hermosa's red-carpet appearance last Thursday was a welcome surprise to entertainment media and fans alike, as the prized Kapamilya star attended the premiere of an entry to this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

Hermosa, along with husband Oyo Boy Sotto, graced the premiere night of the fantasy-comedy flick "Si Agimat, Si Enteng Kabisote at Si Ako" at SM Megamall on Thursday night.

Sotto's father, Vic, stars with Judy Ann Santos and Bong Revilla in the MMFF entry. In earlier installments of the "Enteng" film franchise, Hermosa portrayed Vic's wife.

Last seen in the fantasy series "Noah" (2010), where she portrayed Diwatang Eva, Hermosa has been on hiatus from show business since getting married to the younger Sotto in January 2011.

In December that same year, Hermosa gave birth to a baby girl, Ondrea Bliss, which prolonged her absence from the limelight.

Sotto and Hermosa also have an adopted son, Quiel.

On being a full-time mother the past years, Hermosa said, "I'm enjoying it, I'm happy. [Ondrea Bliss], she's active, and smart!"

Although she devotes most of her time to her duties as a mom, the Star Magic talent said she hopes to make her showbiz comeback in 2013.

"I'm not sure [when I will return to acting], hopefully next year. Plantsahin muna natin bago ako magsalita," she said.

Hermosa, 29, also expressed interest in a reunion project with former leading man and real-life boyfriend Jericho Rosales, "basta malinis lang."

Rosales and Hermosa's first series together, "Pangako Sa'yo" (2000), will be localized for Cambodian viewers by the Cambodian Television Network  and is set to start production in early 2013.

News of the series' revival fueled interest in another Rosales-Hermosa team-up. In an earlier interview, the actor revealed that a Malaysian production company has proposed a project starring the former couple.

Hermosa thanked her fans who continue to support her despite being inactive in show business.

"Kahit na hindi nila ako nakikita ngayon, kahit hindi ako visible on TV, maraming, maraming salamat sa suporta, dahil nandoon pa rin kayo," she said.

Pacquiao-Marquez V in peril?

MANILA, Philippines – It looks like Manny Pacquiao won’t be able to get his revenge against Juan Manuel Marquez as the latter’s wife is insisting it's time for the Mexican boxer to put his boxing gloves away.

Erika Marquez said she fears the possible outcome of a prolonged rivalry between her husband and Pacquiao.

“What I want is for him to retire and to devote his time to enjoying his family. When Juan fights, I suffer enough. In this fight [with Pacquiao] it was no exception,” she said in Boxing Scene.

Pacquiao has already had four tough battles with Marquez.

Although the Filipino boxer drew the first bout and won the next two on points, he suffered a huge blow in their last meeting.

Marquez tagged Pacquiao with a right to the jaw in the sixth round, inflicting the Filipino’s first knockout loss since 1996.

Erika said she understood what Jinkee Pacquiao felt when the latter saw her husband slumped, face down on the canvass.

“I was very [upset] when I saw Pacquiao's wife crying, desperate to climb into the ring. She feared the worst. I saw what she felt and I reflected, and understood her suffering. I felt her anguish when I saw that Pacquiao did not move and did not get up," said Marquez’s wife.

Erika said that extending the rivalry would do more damage to both fighters.

"Yeah, [there are a lot of] offers to continue fighting, but all of the money in the world won't buy you another life, and no money in the world will buy you another brain,” she said.

Jinkee shares the same sentiments with regard to her husband.

In an earlier interview with USA Today, Jinkee said Pacquiao already has a successful career in boxing and that he has nothing left to prove.

"He already has eight (title) belts. He can retire -- stop -- at any time. I want him to stop now. But he is the one who has the last say," she said.

"Boxers risk their lives; [some] end up in wheelchairs. I don't want that to happen to Manny," Jinkee added.

Citing the thrilling outcome of the fourth bout, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has proposed a fifth fight between Pacquiao and Marquez.

Arum said the knockout ending proved that the fourth installment of the Pacquiao-Marquez saga was different from the previous clashes.

“This fight shows the health of the sport,” he said. “Great fight, shown all over it. The knockout happening right in front of the guy who was almost president of the United States [Mitt Romney],” he said.

“No. 5 is now the biggest fight in boxing, bigger than Pacquiao-Mayweather.”

Janine Tugonon explains Miss USA's win

MANILA, Philippines -- Miss Universe 2012 first runner-up Janine Tugonon named four factors that contributed to Miss USA Olivia Culpo being crowned this year's titlist.

At the time the Bataan and Rhode Island beauties held hands awaiting the announcement of the 61st Miss Universe, Tugonon felt there was a "50-50" chance she'd bring home the Philippines' third crown from the international pageant.

"Pero inisip ko rin na pwede ring hindi talaga," Tugonon, 23, told ABS-CBN News' Dyan Castillejo in an exclusive interview shortly after the coronation night held Thursday morning (Manila time) at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

The two-time Binibining Pilipinas contender -- she was runner-up to Shamcey Supsup (Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up) in last year's local competition -- enumerated four reasons why Culpa emerged winner.

Firstly, "Hindi naman pangit 'yung sagot ni USA, and very spontaneous."

In the Question & Answer portion, where the Top 5 picked at random questions from the judges, Culpo was asked to name one thing she would never do again. "Picking on my siblings growing up," she replied.

Tugonon also credited Culpo's being friendly as a factor in her win. "Alam ko rin 'yung personality niya, sobrang okay," the Filipina beauty said.

Leading up to the coronation night, the two appeared together on Las Vegas television as representatives of the 89 Miss Universe candidates to promote their charitable activities.

"Nakakausap ko siya, nakakasama ko siya sa ibang shoot, sobrang okay niya, kaya alam ko na na talagang papasok siya," the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) cum laude graduate added.

Another factor that contributed to Culpo's win, Tugonon said, is: "Kilala narin siya ng Miss Universe organization." As Miss USA, Culpo was under the same group that organizes the yearly Miss Universe pageant.

Lastly, Tugonon pointed to the obvious: "Maganda pa siya."

Even before the pageant, Tugonon said Miss USA appeared to be an early favorite. Much like the Philippine representative, Culpo frequently appeared in promotional activities for the pageant.

"Alam ko talaga si USA, malakas siya nung [pre-pageant] process palang. Kasi kung ako, lagi niyo nakikita sa shoots and interviews, mas parati siya, siya 'yung mas busy sa 'kin," Tugonon said.

Despite finishing runner-up, Tugonon said she is already happy achieving this latest best finish of her country in Miss Universe in over a decade.

"Pero thankful na ako na nakarating doon, dahil kaunting Pinay rin lang naman ang nakakarating sa ganoon, sa last spot, so happy na," she said.

The Philippines' last best finish was the first runner-up win of Miriam Quiambao in 1999. Venus Raj and Shamcey Supsup finished 4th and 3rd runner-up, respectively, in 2010 and 2011.

Netizens in a frenzy with Miss Universe results

MANILA, Philippines – Sharp-witted Filipinos again dominated social media with their jokes about the Miss Universe pageant, which garnered a wide range of reactions, from acceptance to surprise and outrage.

After Janine Tugonon’s first runner-up finish at the Miss Universe pageant, the hashtag #MissPHILIPPINESforMissUniverse2012 trended in the Philippines on Twitter, as did other pageant-related topics #1stRunnerUp, Nigel Barker (the one who questioned Tugonon during the pageant's question and answer portion), #top5, Venus Raj and Trump.

#ChicserForMissUniverse also trended, with netizens joking that the boy band’s members would have a fighting chance if they joined the pageant.

‘Blessing’

Tugonon’s supporters expressed shock at the near-win, as they thought the Filipina did really well during the different areas of the competition, especially the question and answer portion.

Bitter fans said the United States’ win was a consolation for the nation’s recent tragedies, such as typhoon Sandy and the deaths of children in a school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

However, many also agreed with Tugonon, who said her runner-up finish was a blessing from God this Christmas, and that it was a good enough achievement, as it is rare for Filipinos to reach the Top 5 in the Miss Universe pageant.

End of the universe

Several memes have cropped up making fun of the pageant results, which have been reposted by Pinoys looking to vent their frustration with the loss.

Some said Olivia Culpo, who was crowned Miss Universe, should enjoy her reign, as the end of the world is near.

Others poked fun at what they said was a "hometown decision."

Mystics, Internet fuel 'end of the world' fears

CHICHEN ITZA, Mexico -- A few words by an American scholar, a crumbling Mexican monument and the love of a good yarn were all it took to spawn the belief that the world could end this week.

Dec. 21 marks the end of an age in a 5,125 year-old Maya calendar, an event that is variously interpreted as the end of days, the start of a new era or just a good excuse for a party.

Thousands of New Age mystics, spiritual adventurers and canny businessmen are converging on ancient ruins in southern Mexico and Guatemala to find out what will happen.

"No one knows what it will look like on the other side," said Michael DiMartino, 46, a long-haired American who is organizing one of the biggest Dec. 21 celebrations at the Maya temple site of Chichen Itza on the Yucatan peninsula.

It is not the world but "the way we perceive it" that will end, said DiMartino, who pledged his event at ground zero for 2012 acolytes will be a "distilling down of various perspectives into a unified intention for positive transformation, evolution and co-creation of a new way of being."

A mash-up of academic speculation and existential angst seasoned with elements from several world religions, the 2012 phenomenon has been fueled by Hollywood movies and computer games, and relentlessly disseminated by Internet doom-mongers.

Mass hysteria in a Russian prison, a Chinese man building survival pods for doomsday and UFO lovers seeking refuge with aliens in a French mountain village are just some of the reports that have sprung up in the final countdown to Dec. 21.

Robert Bast, a New Zealander living in Melbourne who wrote a book called "Survive 2012" on how to cope with the possible catastrophe, believes the Maya may have sent out a warning.

"The most likely thing for me is a solar storm, but that's not going to kill you straight away. It's more of a long term disaster," said Bast, 47, noting a flu pandemic could also strike the planet. "I feel the world isn't as safe as we think it is. The last couple of generations have had it very cozy."

When dawn breaks on Friday, according to the Maya Long Count calendar, it marks the end of the 13th bak'tun -- an epoch lasting some 400 years -- and the beginning of the 14th.

This fact would probably have languished in academic obscurity had not a young Maya expert named Michael Coe written in the 1960s that to the ancient Mesoamerican culture the date could herald an "Armageddon" to cleanse humanity.

Since then, the cult of 2012 has snowballed.

Among the sun-bleached pyramids, shaded mangroves and deep cenotes of the Maya heartland, there are hopes Dec. 21 will bring a spiritual re-birth.

Nobody seems quite sure what to expect on Friday, but it has not stopped people getting their hopes up.

"This is the Arab Spring of the spiritual movement," said Geoffrey Ocean Dreyer, a 52-year-old U.S. musician wearing a sombrero and mardi gras beads. "We're going to create world peace. We're going to Jerusalem and we're going to rebuild Solomon's temple."

Anxiety attacks

The words of Coe, a highly respected Maya scholar, were published in 1966 at the height of the Cold War, stirring fears in a world haunted by the prospect of nuclear holocaust.

Coe could not be reached for comment for this article, but friends and academics who know him insist he never meant to inspire a vision of apocalypse when he committed them to paper.

Stephen Houston, a Maya expert at Brown University in Rhode Island and student of Coe's, said too much has been read into the end of the 13th bak'tun, which was little more than a "dull mathematical declaration" used to bracket dates.

"I see it all as an expression of present day anxiety and not much more than that," Houston said.

Few remaining inscriptions refer to the event, and the best known one is part of a monument recovered from a Maya site in Tabasco state called Tortuguero -- much of which was torn down in the 1960s to make way for the construction of a cement factory.

Still, the mix of religion, ancient inscriptions and media-driven speculation about impending doom remains potent.

"I got an email the other day from a mother who was contemplating taking her own life, because she didn't know what was really going to happen, she didn't want her children to live through this ordeal," said David Stuart, a Maya expert at the University of Texas. "We can dismiss it as a kooky idea, which it is, but they're still ideas and they still have power."

U.S. space agency NASA has sought to allay fears of impending catastrophe, noting that "our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012."

Nothing has given the 2012 theories more oxygen in the run-up to the big day than the Internet, noted John Hoopes, a Maya anthropologist at the University of Kansas.

"Computers come straight out of the same people who were smoking pot and protesting at Berkeley and Stanford," he said, referring to U.S. student movements in the 1960s.

"This Maya calendar stuff has been part of hacktivism lore for 40 years, since the beginning, and with every significant change in computer technology, it's gotten another boost."

Many of those gathering in Chichen Itza praised the Internet as a discussion forum and organizing tool for New Age events.

"We don't need leaders now we have the Internet," said Muggy Burton, 66, who had traveled to Mexico from Canada with her 15-year-old, blue-haired granddaughter, Talis Hardy.

The two, who communicate with each other by whistling, plan to live in Mexico for six months, according to Burton, who is going to homeschool Hardy. "It's the end of the world for her, and the beginning of a new one," she added.

Maya skeptics

Mexico's federal government is not officially marking the phenomenon, but the country's tourism agency has launched a "Mundo Maya 2012" website with a countdown to Dec. 21.

Up to 200,000 people are expected to descend on Chichen Itza alone for the night of Dec. 20.

Among modern descendants of the Maya, the idea it could all come to an end on Friday generally raises a wry smile - but they are happy to play along if it makes money.

"It's a psychic epidemic," said Miguel Coral, 56, a cigar salesman in Merida, a colonial town and capital of Yucatan state. "It's all about business, but that's fine. It helps our country. I think it's excellent we've exported this idea."

Nearby, workers built a pyramid of spray-painted polystyrene blocks for the opening of the town's Maya festival.

"If people who believe in this joke want to come, let them," said Jose May, a Merida tourism official of Maya descent. "Nobody here believes that. Those people were sold an idea."

Hazy rumors have helped feed the sense of anticipation.

A few hours' drive south of Merida in the remote Maya town of Xul, which means "the end," media reports began circulating as early as 2008 that a group of Italians were readying themselves for impending doom by building apocalypse-proof bunkers.

Today, the settlement dubbed the "end of the world resort" is open for business as "Eco Spa Las Aguilas."

"There's no truth in it," said deputy manager Andrea Podesta, 45, referring to speculation it was a cult.

"Some people came here, took some hidden photos, and published some very unpleasant articles about us," he added, noting the glistening new spa was booked up well into 2013.

Inside, a group of elderly Italians, mostly dressed in white, were watching the path of an asteroid on a giant screen. A black-and-white image of Christ's face hung from the wall and a large stone statue of a robed woman greeted visitors.

Whatever lies in store for the planet, even Maya academics who have fought to play down the hype surrounding the passing of another 24 hours feel there could still be some surprises.

"I think there may be some mischief on Dec. 21 because the whole world is watching," said Hoopes in Kansas, citing rumors hacktivist group Anonymous was planning a stunt. "It's a very fertile opportunity for a tremendous prank."

PH ranks second in 'Gangnam Style' views

MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos are among the biggest fans of the phenomenal Korean dance hit “Gangnam Style,” a new study showed Tuesday.

Data released by the website Viki showed that the Philippines ranked second in terms of views of the Psy hit on YouTube after the Americans.

Canadians ranked third, followed by India and Indonesia. Surprisingly, Psy’s home country Korea was only ninth on the list.

“Gangnam Style” recently became the most viewed video in the history of YouTube since it started taking off in August of this year.

“YouTube shattered barriers to video sharing and discovery; as a result, consumer tastes are becoming increasingly global -- people want something different from what they can watch on their TV sets at home,” Tammy Nam, Viki’s CMO and general manager, Americas, said in a statement.

“‘Gangnam Style’ is just one example of many unexpected global hits we’ll see in 2013,” Nam predicted.

Fil-Ams pray for Connecticut shooting victims

Thousands of Filipinos from throughout Los Angeles County kicked off Simbang Gabi at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Saturday night.

Despite the joys of celebrating Christmas the Filipino way, Filipinos are mindful of the tragedies people face back in the Philippines and in another part of the US.

Archbishop Jose Gomez led this year’s Simbang Gabi's homily by calling for people to pray for the victims of the Connecticut school shooting, and the recent typhoon in the Southern Philippines.

“We need to pray for those who were killed. We need to open our hearts and pray for support to their families and community," the Archbishop said. Balitang America, December 18, 2012

'Hobbit' sets record for US, Canadian debut

LOS ANGELES -- "The Hobbit" brought home a big box office treasure over the weekend, setting a December movie record with $84.77 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales as legions of fans turned out for the long-awaited big-screen return to Middle Earth.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" also rung up sales of $138.2 million in international markets. Global receipts for the prequel to the smash "Lord of the Rings" trilogy stood at $222.97 million through Sunday, distributor Warner Bros. said.

The current projection for the total box office take in 2012 is $10.8 billion, according to an estimate from Hollywood.com, which would beat the $10.6 billion record in 2009.

The 3D "Hobbit" directed by Oscar-winning "Rings" filmmaker Peter Jackson is the first of three films based on a 1937 classic novel by J.R.R. Tolkien. Warner Bros. is aiming to build on the success of the "Rings" series, one of Hollywood's biggest franchises with $2.9 billion in global ticket sales.

"The Hobbit" also set a record with its $15.1 million earnings from IMAX theaters worldwide, according to Warner Bros. It is also the largest opening for any film in the canon of "The Lord of the Rings."

The "Lord of the Rings" movies debuted in theaters from 2001 to 2003. After that, production on "The Hobbit" ran into delays, leaving fans waiting a decade for another look at the fantasy story of dwarves, wizards and elves.

The opening weekend "Hobbit" sales proved interest remained high. North American (U.S. and Canadian) receipts toppled the old record for December set by Will Smith sci-fi flick "I Am Legend," which pulled in $77.2 million when it debuted in 2007.

"The best we were hoping for was to reach or exceed the $77 million set by that movie and we did it by quite a lot. It was all good and we're very happy about it," said Dan Fellman, president of theatrical distribution for Warner Bros.

"You have to assume that by the time this first week is over we are going to have around $110 million in the bank before the holiday even starts," he added.

The new film follows the epic journey of hobbit Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, as he travels through the treacherous Middle Earth with a band of dwarves to steal treasures from the dragon, Smaug.

The movie also stars Richard Armitage and Benedict Cumberbatch, while Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood reprise their "Rings" roles.

Opening-weekend audiences embraced "The Hobbit," awarding an "A" grade in polling by survey firm CinemaScore. Critics had a mixed response to the nearly three-hour film. Sixty-five percent of reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website recommended the movie, although some objected to Jackson's decision to shoot it using a 48-frames-per-second format rather than the usual 24.

Some viewers nauseous

The faster frame rate delivers clearer pictures, but some critics called the format cartoonish and jarring. Only a fraction of theaters showed the film in the new format. Some fans at early screenings in New Zealand complained it made them feel nauseous and dizzy, according to The New Zealand Herald.

The next two "Hobbit" movies are scheduled to reach theaters in December 2013 and July 2014. The films were financed by MGM and Warner Bros.' New Line Cinema unit for an estimated $500 million.

"The Hobbit" took a bumpy, years-long journey to the big screen that included two directors and a lawsuit. Jackson made the "Rings" trilogy when producers could not get "The Hobbit" rights that were held by MGM's United Artists unit.

Guillermo del Toro was first hired to direct "The Hobbit" but he left the project when financial woes at MGM caused delays. The movie went into production only after Jackson settled a lawsuit against New Line in a dispute over profits from the "Rings" films.

"The Hobbit" was the only new nationwide release over the weekend. The rest of the top five were films that have been playing for weeks.

In second place was the animated family film "Rise of the Guardians" with $7.4 million, followed by historical drama "Lincoln" starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the revered U.S. president, which grabbed $7.2 million from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates.

James Bond movie "Skyfall" landed in fourth place with $7 million.

Next on the box office chart was "Life of Pi," which captured $5.4 million. Teen vampire tale "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" earned $5.17 million.

Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. released "The Hobbit." "Lincoln" was produced by Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Co. Sony Corp's movie studio released "Skyfall." Dreamworks Animation distributed "Rise of the Guardians," which was released by Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures. Summit Entertainment, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment, released "Breaking Dawn."

Can exercise detoxify the body?

NEW YORK -- The word "detoxification" is flung around the fitness community as frequently as kettlebells are swung.

Yoga teachers regularly speak of detoxifying twists, aerobics instructors of detoxifying sweat, dieters of detoxifying fasts. But health professionals are skeptical.

"If you start talking about exercising to detoxify, there's no scientific data," said Dr. Elizabeth Matzkin, chief of women's sports medicine at Harvard Medical School. "The human body is designed to get rid of what we don't need."

The same applies to fasting.

"No good scientific data supports any of those cleanses, where you drink juice, or (only) water for a week," she said.

Exercise is important, Matzkin added, because it enables our body to do what it is made to do, but the kidneys and colon get rid of waste. The role of exercise in that process is unclear.

"In general exercise helps our lungs; kidneys get rid of things that can cause us onset of disease," she said.

A healthy lifestyle -- eating healthy, drinking plenty of water and exercising -- is important to detoxifying because it enables our body to do what is intended to do.

"As for specific yoga moves, I'm not so sure," she said.

Yoga instructor and fitness expert Shirley Archer, an author and spokeswoman for the American Council on Exercise (ACE) said the theory behind the effectiveness of detoxifying twists in yoga is that they squeeze the organs, which push the blood out so fresh blood can rush in.

"Better circulation equals better health," said Archer, who is based in Florida. "If detox means to eliminate from the body what it no longer needs, then certain yogic practices can help."

She said yogic deep breathing with strong exhalations can empty the lungs of unneeded carbon dioxide and allow for a fresh breath of more oxygenated air. "This nourishes all of our cells," she said. "It is also a method of cleansing because better circulation equals better health."

Meditative movement practices, such as yoga and tai chi, she added, can detox your attitude because they require staying in the present moment and discourage dwelling on the past.

Last summer, celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson began taking groups of 40-odd women on what she calls Detox Weeks, which involve at least three hours of workouts each day, as well as lectures on fitness and nutrition aimed mainly at encouraging lifestyle changes.

Similar weeks in other cities are planned for 2013.

"Women work out and think 'Why can't my love handles, muffin tops go away'?" said Anderson, creator of the Tracy Anderson Method and a co-owner, with actress Gwyneth Paltrow, of fitness centers in Los Angeles and New York. "The most important thing is if you can become a consistent exerciser."

"A good workout is not five to 10 yoga poses," she explained. "You have to learn to scale up your endurance. If you can only jump for five minutes straight, we'll go to 10 minutes, then 20 minutes."

Anderson said she uses the term detoxification broadly to include everything from working up a good sweat to clearing the mind of destructive thoughts.

"Detoxification is a big topic," she said.

Nancy Clark, a registered dietitian in Boston, Massachusetts and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, said the body generally does a fine job of detoxifying itself through the liver and kidneys. Sweating has nothing to do with it.

"When you sweat you really don't detoxify anything," she explained. "If someone goes on a crash diet, then maybe toxins are released but then the body would take care of them. When you sweat you lose sodium."
