Web giants allowed fake news to flow on Las Vegas shooting

US online giants acknowledged Tuesday they failed to prevent rumors and misinformation from being circulated during and after the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas.

Facebook, Google and Twitter said they were working on fixes after learning of fake news ending up in feeds and searches following the shooting that killed 59 and injured over 500 people.


Some rumors identified the wrong person as the shooter, others named a search for a female person of interest described as a "Trump-hating Rachel Maddow fan," referring to an MSNBC host who is a fierce critic of President Donald Trump.

After news outlets pointed out false reports from the 4chan message board were appearing at the top of Google search results, the Internet giant said it acted to correct the problem.

"Within hours, the 4chan story was algorithmically replaced by relevant results," Google said in an email to AFP.

"This should not have appeared for any queries, and we'll continue to make improvements to prevent this from happening in the future."

Facebook said it discovered a false news story on the shooting and acted to remove it.

"However, its removal was delayed by a few minutes, allowing it to be screen captured and circulated online," Facebook said.

"We are working to fix the issue that allowed this to happen in the first place and deeply regret the confusion this caused."

Twitter said it too was stepping up efforts to weed out false reports on the shooting.

"We are aware of this issue and are proactively taking action on content that violates our terms of service," a Twitter spokesman said.

The online giants have faced increasing pressure to prevent manipulation of their platforms after revelations of Russian-led efforts to spread misinformation ahead of the 2016 US election.

In Las Vegas, Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old gambler and retired accountant, was identified as the shooter who fired on a huge crowd at an outdoor country music concert before killing himself.

Investigators are trying to establish a motive for the deadliest mass shooting in recent US history, but so far have been unable to pin down what drove Paddock to shoot into the crowds from a 32nd floor hotel room.

LOOK: John Lloyd thanks Ellen in 'baduy' post

The two have yet to admit the status of their relationship, but John Lloyd Cruz and Ellen Adarna are obviously close to each other.

In his latest Instagram post, Cruz posted a photo of the two of them, with Adarna kissing him on the cheek.


In the caption, Cruz wrote: "This girl really did something good to my soul. I'll always be grateful."

The two are widely rumored to be dating following a series of posts on Adarna's account.

Last Wednesday, Adarna posted another sweet photo of her cuddling with his "Home Sweetie Home" co-star, apparently taken during their recent Cebu getaway. 

It came a day after she called Cruz "baby love" in another post, and after shrugging off critics of their close relationship by sharing that they bonded over art therapy. 

Cruz and Adarna have been the center of relationship rumors for weeks now. It began after their much-talked Bantayan island trip.


Adarna has previously gone on the record to say that both of them are not yet ready to enter into a new romance. 

Cruz's last relationship was with Angelica Panganiban, which ended in 2016. Adarna, on the other hand, broke up with her boyfriend, Sebastian "Baste" Duterte, back in December.

Pregnant? Nadine Lustre speaks up

MANILA – Nadine Lustre laughed off rumors that she is pregnant.

In an interview on Wednesday, the actress said she doesn’t know where the fake news is coming from considering that she has lost a lot of weight lately.

“Hindi ko po alam. Baka pagkain lang po 'yung nasa loob ng tiyan ko,” she said, laughing.

Asked how she maintains her slim figure, Lustre said: “Nag-gi-gym po ako pero hindi siya regular. Controlled eating lang po ako talaga.”

The actress also shared how she deals with her bashers who spread lies about her on social media. “Depende. May times na dedma. May times talaga na kailangan mag-speak up ka,” she quipped.

Meanwhile, Lustre said she is excited be part of “It’s Showtime” as a regular host beginning next month. Currently, she co-hosts the show three times a week.

As to the best thing she’s learned so far in hosting, Lustre said: “Relax lang, maging open ka lang sa lahat ng sasabihin mo. Siyempre nakaka-relate ka sa iba’t ibang klase ng tao. Nakaka-relate ako kila Vice. Natututo ako mag-host.”

Aside from “It’s Showtime,” the actress is also working on a movie with her boyfriend and onscreen partner, James Reid, but they cannot reveal any details about it just yet.

Has Ian Veneracion split with wife? Manager reacts

MANILA -- The manager of Ian Veneracion has denied reports that the actor is now separated from his wife, Pam Gallardo.

The rumors circulated after a tabloid linked the 41-year-old actor to FHM magazine's "sexiest woman" Jessy Mendiola.

According to Veneracion's manager Ricky Gallardo, the actor and his wife merely shrugged off the rumors.

"Natatawa lang kami kasi nabasa namin 'yon sa isang tabloid. Tawanan lang kami kasi nagdi-dinner kami – ako, si Pam, si Ian. Natatawa rin lang silang mag-asawa," Gallardo said in an interview with Push.


Gallardo added that Veneracion's love for his family is so strong that he would even refuse job offers that might affect his image.

“Kapag apektado 'yong anak niya, apektado 'yong pamilya niya, hindi niya tatanggapin, kahit P500,000 or whatever pa yan,” the manager said.

Willie Revillame addresses gambling rumors

MANILA – Former Kapamilya TV host Willie Revillame finally broke his silence on rumors saying he is wasting millions through gambling.

Ricky Lo, in his column for The Philippine Star on Tuesday, said Revillame did not completely deny that he has been going to the casino.

“You know, I’ve been working so hard so I deserve to enjoy myself. I’m betting my own money. If I win, I can help more people; if I lose, I still continue to help people,” he said.

Revillame, however, admitted that he has indeed sold some of his properties.

“Yes, it’s true, I have acquired so many properties at ibinibenta ko ‘yung hindi ko na napapakinabangan,” he said.

Among the properties which Revillame has sold or is trying to sell are the Wil Events Place and the Wil Tower in Quezon City.

Contrary to other reports, Lo wrote that Revillame has kept his yacht, his private plane, his mansion at Ayala Heights in Quezon City and his property in Tagaytay City where he’s building a hotel.

Early this year, Revillame’s daughter, actress Meryll Soriano, said people should not judge her father on how he wants to spend his money because he earned them the hard way.

“Kasi ‘di ba, whatever he does with his life, it’s his prerogative. He has worked hard for everything, for his wealth. So whatever he wants to do with that, we don’t have any right to judge or to say something bad about it because it’s his money,” she said.

Revillame’s last television project was “Wiltime Big Time” on TV5. He has yet to make a TV comeback in a station which he refuses to reveal.

MANILA – Did President Benigno Aquino III go on a date with beauty queen-turned-actress Bianca Manalo?

In an interview with “The Buzz” aired on Sunday, Manalo played down the rumors, as she stressed that the country's bachelor President is not pursuing her.

However, the Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 2009 winner did not deny that she indeed had dinner with Aquino.

“Na-meet ko po si Mr. President. Wala naman pong ligawan but nakipag-dinner po kami with him. My sister was with me,” she said.

Aquino’s last reported relationship was with Korean TV personality Grace Lee early last year. However, they have stopped "seeing each other" in May 2012.

Manalo, on the other hand, was previously linked with model Carlo Gonzales after a picture of the two made the rounds on the Internet late last year.

Prior to that, Manalo’s last relationship was with actor John Prats. They broke up in June 2012.

Yeng Constantino denies that she's a lesbian

MANILA, Philippines -- Singer Yeng Constantino on Monday spoke up on rumors that she's a lesbian.

In an interview on "KrisTV" aired on Monday, Constantino stressed that the reason she doesn't have a boyfriend is because she's still waiting for the right guy.

"Unang una po sa lahat, sobrang hindi po ako galit sa mga taong naga-accuse sa akin. So kung sinasabi nila 'yan eh ginagalang ko po and opinyon nila," Constantino told host Kris Aquino.

"Pero sobrang secured lang po ako on who I am. I am a woman. Babae po ako at pinagsisigawan ko po' yan," she stressed.

Constantino believes her love for rock music may have led some people to believe that she's a lesbian.

"Siguro nagtataka sila dahil rakista ako at moderno pero conservative po talaga ako. I'm just waiting for that one person who will love me for the rest of my life. I just don't want to give away my 'oo' to anyone else," she said.

"Ang hirap nga pangatawanan dahil ang daming gwapo sa industriya pero gusto mong gawin at panindigan kasi mahal ko ang magulang ko. Cayetano addresses 'romantic' ties with Kris

MANILA, Philippines -- TV and film director Lino Cayetano has spoken up about rumors romantically linking him to Kris Aquino.


In an interview with ABS-CBN News on Wednesday, Cayetano said he and the 42-year-old actress-host have become closer as friends, but denied that they are romantically involved.

"We're good friends ni Kris. I'm very thankful for her friendship. I'm getting to know her. She's a very good person," Cayetano said.

Rumors of a romantic relationship between Aquino and the film director started to surface in January, following his guest appearance on host's morning talk show "Kris TV."

During the program, Aquino teased that Bianca Gonzalez, the director's former girlfriend, had told her that she "approves" of any romantic ties between the "Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw" star and the film director.

Asked how his friendship with Aquino developed, Cayetano said on Wednesday, "I met her before through Liz Uy (fashion stylist, also Cayetano's former girlfriend), tapos sa ABS nagkikita kami, then more and more nag-uusap kami."

He clarified, however, that they have not been "going out."

"Sa akin, it's simple lang -- we're friends. If there's anything more to it, siguro people will know naman, if that ever happens," he said.

On the possibility of working with Aquino on a project, Cayetano added, "Yeah, for sure, I would love to work with her. Ako, I'm attracted to strong and smart women. My ate (Senator Pia Cayetano) is like that, so wala naman problema sa akin 'yun."

Daniel reiterates Kathryn not yet his girlfriend

MANILA, Philippines – Actor Daniel Padilla on Sunday stressed that actress Kathryn Bernardo is not yet his girlfriend.

Rumors circulated that Padilla and Bernardo became a couple when they were in Hong Kong December last year.

“No. I swear to God, no. Hindi po talaga kami,” Padilla said on “The Buzz.”

The actor, however, did not deny that Bernardo is really special to him.

MANILA, Philippines -- Did Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Sam Concepcion become a couple at one point?


At the sidelines of a press conference held Thursday for her beauty services endorsement, the 18-year-old actress was asked on her rumored relationship with the 20-year-old Kapamilya talent.

"We're friends, we hang out, we watch movies, ganoon. Hangout-hangout lang. We're good friends," said Curtis-Smith, who is the younger sister of "It's Showtime" host Anne Curtis.

Asked whether Concepcion is courting her, she said: "Tanungin niyo na lang siya."

Curtis-Smith kept mum, merely saying "basta," when reporters noted that rumors have surfaced that she and Concepcion were actually a couple for a time.

"Basta we know each other, we hang out, basta 'yun na 'yun. I'm not denying we're really good friends," she said. "Somewhat, yes, somewhat we're special."

According to Curtis-Smith, she is set to stay for good in the Philippines to continue her showbiz career, having finished high school in Australia. The young actress said she will live with her older sister, Anne, to "establish [her] footing."

Vic on Pauleen: 'Wala naman kaming tinatago'

MANILA, Philippines – After it was reported that they have already called it quits, it seems that things are now smooth again between comedian Vic Sotto and television host Pauleen Luna.


Just recently, Sotto and Luna, who are rumored to be in a relationship, were spotted together at a red carpet event at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City, according to "The Buzz" hosts Boy Abunda and Charlene Gonzales.

The two cited a report from the entertainment website Pep.ph, which quoted Sotto as saying: "Wala naman kaming itinatago eh. Just don't talk about it, kasi para tahimik."

Actress Andi Eigenmann is apologizing to the parents of rumored boyfriend Jake Ejercito for comments made by her mom, veteran actress Jaclyn Jose.

MANILA, Philippines - Actress Heart Evangelista seems to be slowly opening up on her rumored romance with Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero."

On her Twitter account on Wednesday, Evangelista posted a message about missing her "Chiz."

"I miss you Chiz curls!," tweeted Evangelista, who has remained mum about the real status of her relationship with the senator.

She then tweeted about other snacks that she misses, like pichi-pichi.

The actress and Escudero have been spotted several times together, after her she ended her relationship with Japanese-Brazilian model Daniel Matsunaga.

In a recent interview, Evangelista admitted that she's having fun with her "meetings" with Escudero.

Meanwhile, Escudero, who's back as a guest co-host of "KrisTV," asked the show's main host, Kris Aquino, on Wednesday for suggestions on where he could take a four- to six-day vacation before the campaign starts next year.

Aquino then suggested the senator to try visiting Bali, Indonesia.

The actress-host even teased Escudero that he could also consider vacationing to Las Vegas.

Coco Martin, Matteo kiss and make up

MANILA - A year after they got into a fight, actors Coco Martin and Matteo Guidicelli, finally ended their rift.

During the 6th Star Magic Ball held at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel on Saturday night, Matteo extended a hand of reconciliation when he awarded Martin with the "Star Magic Standout Award."

"Isang hug nga bro," Guidicelli asked Martin.

The "Walang Hanggan" star accepted the offer and they then hugged each other.

Last year, the two made headlines when they got into a brawl after the 5th Star Magic Ball.

Maja Salvador, who was Guidicelli's girlfriend at that time, was the cause of the fight. He later apologized for the incident.

Kinumpirma sa amin ni Nene Riego, columnist at PR lady ng mga Quizon, na maayos ang kalagayan ni Mang Dolphy at walang katotohanan ang malisyosong balita.

Makailang ulit nang napapabalita ang tungkol sa diumano’y pagpanaw ni Mang Dolphy sa dyaryo at telebisyon kaya hindi na daw sila nagulat sa pinakahuling naglabasan tungkol sa kalusugan ni Mang Dolphy.

Samantala, nilinaw din ng publicist ang pag-iyak ni Zsa Zsa kamakailan sa naganap na presscon ng teleseryeng “Budoy” kung saan isa sa cast ang singer-actress.

“Napaiyak siya dahil mami-miss daw niya kung mga kasama niya sa teleserye na naging very understanding sa kanya.

“Minsan kasi dumarating siya sa set na wala pang tulog dahil galing siya kay Mang Dolphy, at naiintindihan daw ‘yon ng mga kasama niya. Kaya napaluha si Zsa Zsa,” paliwanag ni Tita Nene.
